Spotlight on:  Time for Grandparents

The UnitingCare’s Time for Grandparents program is a state-wide service supporting Grandparents across Queensland who informally care for their grandchildren.  Operating for many years, the program provides telephone support for Grandparent carers; information and referral service for the families; provide brokerage for grandchildren to participate in sports or recreational activities; assist payment of school camps as well as providing holiday camps for the families where possible.

The Time for Grandparents program provide opportunities for Grandfamilies to enjoy school holiday camps during the year.  These camps are a great opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to make memories and be around other families who understand what they go through as Grandparent carers. These camps give Grandparents the opportunity for some time out and to talk with others on matters that concerns them.  Grandchildren are supported by qualified Outdoor Education Instructors to participate in adventure-based activities whilst Grandparents have some well-earned ‘time-out’ to read a book, go for a bush walk, catch-up on lost sleep or watching the children participate on their venturous activities – it’s your choice.

Time for Grandparents have a new online peer support group for Grandparent carers that run fortnightly where you can hear from guest speakers on a range of topics, including your choice of topic.  Time for Grandparents is currently rolling out face-to-face support groups.

The program may extend day respite options or social gathering for Grandparent carers who cannot access the holiday camps and needing a break from their caring role or feel isolated or disconnected from community.
