What is healthy ageing?

Everyone, no matter where they live, should have the chance to live a long and healthy life. But where we live and the world around us can have a big impact on our health – for better or worse. Things like clean air, safety, social support, good health care, and opportunities to stay active all help us age well.

What does healthy ageing mean?

Healthy ageing means creating the right conditions so people can do the things that matter to them as they grow older – like staying active, socialising, making choices, and feeling valued. You don’t have to be free from illness to age healthily. Many older adults live with health conditions, but with the right support, they can still enjoy a good quality of life.

What is functional ability?

The World Health Organization (WHO) says healthy ageing is about keeping your functional ability – in other words, being able to do what’s important to you. This includes your ability to:

  • Take care of your basic needs (like eating, personal hygiene and dressing)
  • Keep learning and making decisions
  • Move around safely
  • Stay connected with friends and family
  • Contribute to your community.

What affects functional ability?

  • Intrinsic Capacity – This is your mental and physical abilities. It includes your memory, strength, hearing, eyesight, and ability to think and move. It can change with age, illness, or injury.
  • Your Environment – This includes your home, your neighbourhood, local services, attitudes in society, and access to support. A good environment helps you stay active and independent for longer.

Together, your abilities and environment shape how well you age.

Things to keep in mind about ageing

  • Everyone ages differently
  • Some people in their 80s are very active, while others may need support with daily tasks. There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to ageing.
  • Life experiences matter
  • Our health and wellbeing in later life are shaped by things like income, education, family life, gender, and access to health care throughout our lives.

Healthy ageing vs. active ageing – what’s the difference?

In the past, the focus was on active ageing (staying physically and socially active). Now, the focus is on healthy ageing, which also highlights the importance of health, care, environment, and support; helping older people live well, no matter their situation. Healthy ageing is about more than just staying busy, it’s about feeling safe, respected, and supported as you grow older.
