Sunshine Coast Independent Living Service (SCILS)
SCILS services the whole of the Sunshine Coast, including the hinterland, offering a wide array of personal development skills and social group activities that continue to educate and prepare adults with intellectual disabilities for independent life. The personal development skills currently offered are: Travel Training Money Handling and Budgeting Literacy and Numeracy Computer Skills Cooking Shopping Behaviour Management Social Activities and Awareness Personal Care and Grooming Phone Etiquette Preparation for Work Experience/Placement Home Duties Household Management This list is not limited and SCILS strives to ensure that any additional need required by individuals is catered for. Weekly Social groups attend activities and visit various attractions and community service groups. As well as hosting an annual Open Day and Christmas party, Social Groups enjoy day trips to museums, art galleries, theme parks, the movies etc., with weekend trips and holidays catered for. In the past, these have included excursions to Tangalooma, Gold Coast, Fraser Island, whale watching and Cairns. Social Group clients are also encouraged to contribute to the SCILS quarterly newsletter with letters, articles, drawings and poems. A variety of group activities promoting friendship, self-esteem and social skills are offered and include Music Group, Cooking Group, Aqua Aerobics, Fun and Fitness, Gardening and Maintenance, Arts and Crafts and Ten Pin Bowling.
