Neighbourhood Centre Inc – Sherwood
The Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre is a place where people and groups can meet and become involved in their community. The Centre aims to respond to community needs, provide assistance, and promote the sharing and learning of skills in the community. The Centre provides:- * Emergency relief. * Information and referral. * Advocacy services. * Women’s activity group. * Seniors Enjoying Active Lifestyles (SEALS) meet at the centre once a week, the aim of this group is to mix and meet new people of mature age and to form friendships with social interaction. Several senior groups run activities and support, at the Centre. * Volunteers assist with reception, child-care, emergency relief and bus driving. The Centre has a community bus available to other agencies at low cost. * Housing Service under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP). There are 5 one bedroom flats on the premises for short term, crisis accommodation and 2 Housing Support Workers. Centre activities include: Computer lessons for individuals, computer hardware classes, Mens’ Group, Playgroup, Seniors Enjoying Active Lifestyles (SEALS), JP Service, Cards 500 Club, Pottery Clubs, South West Interagency Group, Bus Hi, Hall and Office Hire, Craft Markets. Privately run classes include: Art classes, Belly Dance for Seniors, Scrapbooking, Elite School of Dance, Weight Loss Challenge, French classes, Super Art for those with a disability. Emergency relief administered on Monday within geographical area (Chelmer, Corinda, Darra, Graceville Jindalee, Middle Park, Mt Ommaney, Oxley, Riverhills, Sherwood, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sinnamon Park, Tennyson and Westlake). Written refferal required for other areas. Help with food vouchers, cheques to recognized companies, and food. Crisis accommodation for up to 12months.
